Super League Basketball Championship

The B. Braun Sheffield Sharks return to league action after the international break for the only game ahead of their Cup Final appearance in Nottingham on March 9th. The Sharks will be keen to keep up the pressure on leaders London Lions, who have a two game slate over the weekend. Opponents Bristol are familiar, being the side the Sharks defeated over two legs to reach the Cup Final, and having negotiated a tough second game, Atiba Lyons’ men will be aware of how resilient the South West outfit can be. The Flyers gym has proved to be a challenging venue in the past so an intriguing contest awaits on Saturday evening.

Saturday – Flyers v Sharks – SGS College Arena – 7.30pm

Ones To Watch

Keddy Johnson – His 26 points was key to the Flyers getting an overtime road win in Surrey just before the international break. The slippery guard adds 20.8 points per game for Bristol this season as one of their main scoring threats.

Kendall Lewis – Impressed recently in the Cup mini-series against the Sharks and added a 10 point, 12 board double-double as Bristol used the extra five minutes to take down the 89ers by 83-89.

Evan Walshe – Developed into a very reliable player for both the Flyers and Great Britain, and influences the game all over the court. Recorded 13 / 6 / 4 against Surrey on 50% shooting.

Leslee Smith – Former Shark who is skippering the Bristol side this season. Led from the front against Surrey with 16 points from only 14 minutes court-time, where he made 5 of 8 from the field and went a perfect 4 of 4 from the line.

Shark Bites

The 17 previous games played on Flyers home court have seen the Sharks victorious 7 times.

The Sharks have now won their last 8 games, the longest winning streak since January 2016. This is the 18th time in club history that they have registered 8 consecutive wins.

The Sharks enter March with an unbeaten home record, 8-0, in Championship-only fixtures for only the second time in their 31 seasons. The only other time they reached March unbeaten at home was in the 2002-03 season where they remained undefeated on their home court in all Championship fixtures. That season was the last time the Sharks topped the league table at the end of the season.

Prior to this season, no Sharks player had scored 25 in a game since Sa’eed Nelson hit 33 at Manchester on 25th September 2022. This season has already seen Sharks players score 28 points or more 5 times. In the 2009-10 season, Mike Cook scored 28 or more in 24 games.
