Super League Basketball Championship

Just four games remain in the Super League Basketball regular season and the B. Braun Sheffield Sharks tick off three in a period of five days. Firstly, they head to the North East to take on Newcastle Eagles on Friday evening and follow that up with the visit of Leicester Riders to the Canon Medical Arena on Sunday afternoon. Then, a swift rematch with the Riders takes place down in Leicester on Tuesday evening. The Sharks have a solid grip on that fourth place seeding at the moment but can’t afford to be complacent with the end of season playoffs just around the corner. It all happens at this time of the year – make sure you don’t miss out!

Ones To Watch

RaySean Taylor – Big double-double for the Eagles guard as the Newcastle smashed through the 100 point barrier against Surrey. Finished with 21 points and 10 assists in the Eagles 9 point victory in Guildford.

Gus Okafor – Another big scorer against the Niners. His 20 points included 4 makes from downtown as a big final quarter took them to the 94-103 success. Puts up 13 points and 4.5 boards for the league campaign.

Maceo Jack – The former Cheshire Phoenix man wasn’t too far behind his colleagues with 19 points in the Surrey win. Free-scoring vet who contributes a very healthy 15.7 points per game to his team’s cause.

Deion Hammond – Played a very solid back-up role for the Eagles with 17 points in the Surrey dub. Records 11.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals for the campaign from just under 28 minutes court time so far.

Ones to Watch

Flynn Boardman-Raffet – Has really stepped up for the Riders in their last five games. Contributed a sizeable 24 points and 8 rebounds as Rob Paternostro’s side defeated bottom side Caledonia by 93-95 in overtime on Sunday.

Xavier Bledson – Recent Leicester recruit who added 16 / 4 / 3 against the Scots, largely through making 9 of 12 from the line. Formerly of Iskra Svit in the Extraliga.

Keddy Johnson – Former Bristol Flyer who is now four games into his Leicester Riders career. Played 39 minutes in the tough Gladiators encounter to end with 16 points, 2 rebounds and 5 assists. Added 24 points against Bristol and 23 against Surrey prior to the Caledonia encounter.

Travis Evee – Assist-friendly guard who dished 5 dimes against Caledonia as well as adding 10 points and claiming 4 boards. Puts up 11.4 points for the season alongside 2.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.2 steals.

The Sharks and the Eagles complete their four game Championship series on Friday night with Sharks holding a 2-1 advantage but Newcastle in front on points scored by 248-245. Whoever wins on Friday will take the head to head.

Against Leicester Riders, the Sharks hold a 2-0 advantage before the upcoming two games in three days. Sharks hold a massive 53 point basket difference – 186-133 – from those two wins.

The Sharks meet Leicester in consecutive Championship games on Sunday and Tuesday. This is the 21st time the Sharks have met the same opposition in Championship games in their 32 seasons. Fourteen of those 21 instances are since October 2021.

Sharks won the Championship head to head against Riders last season for the first time since the 2010-2011 season.
