Super League Basketball Championship

After the elation of reaching the SLB Cup Final, attention turns immediately back to the Super League Basketball Championship for the B. Braun Sheffield Sharks with another week of important fixtures. An unfamiliar Wednesday night slot sees Manchester Basketball making the journey over the Pennines as the Sharks look to regain equal first place with leaders London Lions. On Sunday, the Sharks head north west for another contest with Cheshire Phoenix in a series that has become unmissable in recent times. With four weeks until the big game, it is important that business is taken care of in the league and the Sharks will be all too aware of that.

Ones To Watch

Makai Ashton-Langford – Top-scored for Manchester as they came out second best in a tough game against leaders London. His 12 point, 1 rebound, 3 assist, 2 steal outing was comparable to season averages of 12.8 / 4.1 / 5.4.

Ian Dubose – Gradually growing into his role in Manchester and had the best index of any Mcr player against the Lions. Finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal against the men from the capital.

Junior Madut – The South Sudanese product matched fellow guard Dubose’s output going 5 of 8 from inside for 11 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists and 2 steals in the 72-108 home defeat to the leaders. Averages 9.8 points per game for the season.

DJ Mitchell – Was on double-double watch for his 8 points and 8 rebounds in the London loss but is usually a much more prolific performer. Puts up 14.4 points, 6.2 boards and 2.4 assists for the campaign so far.

Ones To Watch

Tyreek Scott-Grayson – Cheshire lost out in a three figure shootout in Newcastle last Friday but Scott-Grayson showed why he is now given a starting role with the ‘Nix. His 24 points were based on 10 of 11 makes from the line as the rangey guard showed why he is much admired.

Nick Timberlake – The noted three point threat only converted two against the Eagles but was highly-successful inside, going 7 of 9 to end with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. Averaging 17.9 points on the season.

Larry Austin Jr – On a resurgence in form as he weighed in with a 17 point, 10 rebound double-double in the North East that also came with 7 assists. Despite the outstanding performance against his old side, he couldn’t prevent Cheshire slipping to the 110-101 defeat.

Cameron Holden – Back in the team after injury, the do-it-all Holden contributed 13 points, 8 boards, 6 assists and a steal in the Newcastle game and will undoubtedly continue to grow in influence as he has demonstrated in the recent past.

The Sharks only league defeat in the last five games came against Manchester by 72-76 at the start of January.

The Sharks – Manchester links are strong with Jamell Anderson previously having played for the Lancastrians and Marcus Delpeche, Nicholas Lewis and Coach Callum Jones formerly suiting up in the blue and yellow of Sheffield.

Sunday will be the 6th meeting of the Sharks and the Phoenix this season. The Sharks have 3 wins to Cheshire’s 2 although the league series is currently tied at 1-1.
